Groceries. By far our biggest expense. Also….probably the most annoying expense. Because WHYYYYYY does food have to be so dang expensive?!
It’s also the expense that I’ve been working for ages to cut down. Spoiler alert…I’m horrible at it. I’m the girl at Target with list in hand and walks out with 80 things I didn’t need. I don’t trust myself at any store. I’m always on the lookout for new, fun food finds and they usually don’t do well for the grocery budget. Because food is so dang expensive. It’s a viscious cycle y’all.
But, for the last 2 months I’ve been making a solid effort to cut down any way we can. And, while it’s not perfect yet, I have been able to cut down our grocery costs by a good bit. So, I thought I’d share with you guys what I’ve done to help cut down on our grocery bill.
5 Ways to Save Money on Groceries
1. Meal Plan and Prep
By far my biggest tip for saving money on groceries and also the least fun. Meal planning is essential for saving money because you know exactly what you’re going to need for the week. Then you make a handy little list and…if you stick to the list…you’ll see major money savings. Now, if you’re like me, sticking to a list is almost impossible but challenge yourself to do it and I think you’ll be shocked at the savings. Also, by meal planning, you can plan meals that need similar ingredients…ones you can use for other dishes (I’m looking at you cilantro).
Meal prepping also helps out a ton because you’re not wasting money eating out. All your lunches and breakfasts are planned for easy grab and go, saving you buckets of money. Yes, it takes some time but only an hour or two on Sunday. The rest of the day you can kick your legs up and relax knowing you’ve set yourself up for success for the work week.
Where are all my Target lovers at? If you don’t have Cartwheel, get it. Basically, you download the Target app on your phone, click on the cartwheel section and add offers that you love. This thing is genius. There are offers for anything and everything on there. Some are only 5% but some are 25% to 50 % off. And they also have started putting coupons on there that can help you save even more money. And during Christmas, they run 50% off toy specials every day. This app is a life saver and has saved me a TON of money on groceries. Check it out here.
I’m going to be super honest with y’all. I’m late to jump on the Ibotta train. But it is amazing. It’s an app you throw on your phone and has all kinds of rebates. Not only that but you can do online shopping at some stores through Ibotta and get cash back. Not only that but they also offer bonuses throughout the month and that’s just free money. And they have rebates for organic things and other healthy foods. I’ve used this app for 2 solid months and earned over $100 in cash back. Which you can put in your paypal or get gift cards to help out with some Christmas shopping. Check it out here.
I LOVE Boxed. If you haven’t heard about Boxed, it’s basically a Sams club or Bjs or Costco but WITHOUT membership fees. So you can shop bulk without paying a membership or leaving your home (winning). Yup, it comes straight to your door. I love it. It’s a great way to save money on things like household goods, personal care items, and school lunch stuff. Check Boxed out here and get $15 off your $60 order.
Thrive Market is great for people who want to save on organic foods. I buy a lot of my cooking oils from here because I save SO much money. There is a membership fee that’s $59 for the entire year. But you can try it out for free which I highly recommend. I love it. Super fast shipping and the products that I’ve gotten so far are amazing. I highly recommend this avocado oil from Primal Kitchen and this ghee from 4th and Heart. Both are amazing. Also Thrive Market’s Extra virgin olive oil is really good. Check it out here and get $25 off your first order.
